Meta's WhatsApp has rolled out a new artificial intelligence feature that allows users to summarise unread personal messages in bullet points. This tool, currently launched in English for users in the United States, is designed to streamline message reading by condensing lengthy conversations into concise highlights.
According to WhatsApp, the feature operates under the name "summarise privately," and appears above the unread messages section. Once selected, Meta AI processes the chat and delivers a summary without revealing any content to Meta or WhatsApp. This is made possible through the app's "Private Processing" technology, which ensures that AI interactions occur in a secure, isolated environment.
The platform clarified that the summary function is entirely optional and disabled by default. Additionally, AI-powered tools remain restricted in group chats to preserve WhatsApp's privacy standards.
WhatsApp noted in a blog post that users can choose to activate the feature when needed, and that message summaries are generated confidentially. The app promises that neither the summaries nor the original messages are accessible to anyone outside the user’s device, reinforcing WhatsApp's commitment to user privacy.
While Meta has not confirmed the accuracy level of these summaries, it acknowledged that the AI may still have limitations. There has been no official statement on when the tool will expand to other languages or regions.
This update follows WhatsApp's broader integration of Meta AI, which includes the ability to generate images in chats and answer queries in real time.
